Replace if not with unless to express conditions concisely.
Unit 49 – First Conditional with “unless” (A2)
Introduction
In daily life, we often talk about future results and the conditions that make them possible: plans, rules, promises, and warnings. In this unit, you will learn how to use unless to express a condition in a shorter, more natural way. It helps you replace if not and makes your English sound clearer and more confident.
Learning Objectives

Learning Objectives
By the end of this unit, you will be able to: use the first conditional with unless; replace if not with unless correctly; choose the correct verb forms in both clauses; avoid common mistakes with negative meaning.
1) The First Conditional: a quick reminder
We use the first conditional to talk about a real and possible future situation and its result.
Form: If + present simple, will + base verb
Example: If it rains, I will stay at home.
Here, the rain is possible, and staying at home is the result.
2) What “unless” means

Important concept
Unless means “if not”. It introduces a condition that must happen to avoid the result.
Compare:
If you do not hurry, you will miss the bus.
Unless you hurry, you will miss the bus.
Both sentences have the same meaning. The second one is more concise.
3) Form and word order with “unless”
Form: Unless + present simple, will + base verb
Example: Unless I study tonight, I will fail the test.
You can also change the order:
I will fail the test unless I study tonight.
The meaning stays the same. When the sentence starts with unless, we usually use a comma. When unless is in the middle, we usually do not.
4) A common mistake: double negatives

Warning
Do not use a negative verb after unless in this structure. Unless already has a negative meaning.
Incorrect: Unless you don’t wear a helmet, you will get hurt.
Correct: Unless you wear a helmet, you will get hurt.
5) When “unless” is natural
We often use unless for rules, warnings, and strong conditions:
Unless you pay today, we will cancel the order.
You won’t get in unless you have a ticket.
Unless we leave now, we will be late.
